In the last of the traditional ‘Seven Last Words’ of Jesus from the cross, Christ quotes the first half of Psalm 31:5. This good ole Jewish song had become a good ole Jewish (bedtime) prayer. Lk 9:22, 18:31-33).

The church in Thessalonica, which had endured harsh persecution, asked Paul: when is Jesus coming back? What is going to happen to our brothers and sisters who have died/have been killed? Paul addresses their inquiry in this passage (1 Th 5:1-11).

It consists of a vertical component (obedience to God in Christ) as well as horizontal component (self-sacrificially striving for another’s ultimate good). We should love Jesus and love like Jesus because He first loved us…
