“Water Into Wine: A Miracle For Mum? A Taste Of What’s To Come!” | John 2:1-11 Bible Study

First streamed on 5.10.23. First posted on 5.11.23

Jesus turns water into wine in order to give a sign.

This is more than just a miraculous account; it’s an epiphany of Christ’s glory1 (cf. Jn 1:14, 2:11) — that people might put their trust in Him (Jn 20:30-31; cf. Ex 4:8-9, 14:31).

It’s His first sign (Jn 2:11). And it’s a sign that signifies a new direction. It’s a turn signal on God’s road of redemption.

For it demonstrates how the old covenant is fulfilled by the new covenant. This is grace in place of grace already given (Jn 1:16-17).

As it’s been said, “Jesus changes the water of Judaism into the wine of Christianity”.2

This is a taste of what’s to come: the prophesied messianic new wine (Jer 31:12; Joel 3:18; Amos 9:13-14; Is 25:6-8) and wedding banquet (Jn 2:1; Mt 22:2, 25:1; Mk 2:19; Lk 12:36; Jn 3:29; Hos 2:16; Is 54:5, 62:5; Rev 19:7, 9, etc.) for all who are faithful to Christ the King.

It’s a sample of the Savior’s forthcoming salvation – the consummation of the Kingdom of God.

And, Jesus does not let anyone – no matter how close – interfere with His mission from the Father… not even His own mother.

This is not a mere miracle for mum; it’s a taste of what’s to come.
